Draft Notes[edit]

This was the first draft in which the Arizona Diamondbacks and Tampa Bay Devil Rays took part, and the longest draft overall with 1,740 players selected across 100 rounds.

Four players selected in the first round (Lee, Patterson, White, and Seay) did not sign with the teams that selected them and were declared free agents according to Rule 4 (E). Lee and Patterson ultimately signed with the Diamondbacks, and White and Seay made deals with the Devil Rays.

Travis Phelps was selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 89th round and in 2001 became the lowest round draftee to ever play in the majors. Scott Seabol, drafted in the 88th round by the New York Yankees, also made his major league debut that year.

Clay Condrey was selected by the New York Yankees in the 94th round, but failed to sign. He later signed with the San Diego Padres as an amateur free agent, and made his major league debut in 2002.
