Biographical Information

Shortstop Matt Halloran was selected by the San Diego Padres in the first round of the 1996 amateur draft. He made it to AA.

Halloran hit .493 as a high school senior. Baseball America named him a second-team All-American alongside Jimmy Rollins and Damian Rolls, behind the first team of Brent Abernathy, Eric Chavez and Joe Lawrence. Halloran was the 15th overall pick, between Dee Brown and Lawrence. The next year, another Chancellor player would go in the first round, Chris Stowe. Stowe would have an even shorter pro career than Halloran, pitching only 9 games. Matt signed for a $1 million bonus. Sent to the GCL Padres, he put up okay numbers - .261/.322/.373 at the plate while fielding .945. Baseball America did not name him as one of the Gulf Coast League's top 10 prospects though five other shortstops were chosen from a deep field: Chad Hermansen, Alex Gonzalez, Carlos Guillen, Michael Barrett and D'Angelo Jimenez.

In 1997, Halloran struggled both offensively (.201/.256/.266) and defensively (.894) in 46 games for the Clinton Lumber Kings before dislocating his shoulder while diving for a ball on the rock-hard infield. He returned to Clinton in '98 and improved a tad, hitting .224/.289/.290. He stole 19 bases in 31 tries and made 38 errors (23 shy of Midwest League leader Michael Cuddyer's 61), fielding .931. With the 1999 Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, he hit .217/.272/.265, ending his time in the Padres chain.

Signing with the Texas Rangers, Halloran spent his last two years as a utility man. In 2000, he played for the Savannah Sand Gnats (.171/.247/.207 in 35 G) and Charlotte Rangers (2 for 14, 2 2B, BB). In '01, he was with Charlotte (.227/.269/.364 in 26 G) and the Tulsa Drillers (.214/.276/.329 in 27 G). Overall, he had batted .219/.279/.292 in 396 games as a pro and fielded .936
