Biographical Information[edit]

First baseman A.J. Zapp was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the first round of the 1996 amateur draft out of Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Indiana, where he hit .524 with 16 home runs and 50 RBIs as a senior. He bypassed an opportunity to play for the University of Notre Dame and ultimately signed with the Braves. However, he struggled with injuries in the minors and eventually landed in the Seattle Mariners organization. In 2003, he hit .277 with 26 homers and 92 RBI for the San Antonio Missions of the Texas League. He later moved on to the Cincinnati Reds system and retired after playing with the Jacksonville Suns of the Southern League in 2006.

In 2007, Zapp returned to his home state when he was named head coach of Franklin High School in Franklin, Indiana.
