Biographical Information[edit]

Travis Phelps is the lowest round draftee to ever play in the majors. He was selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 89th round of the 1996 amateur draft.

He had a good rookie year for the Devil Rays in 2001, posting an ERA of 3.48 (the team ERA was 4.94 and the league ERA was 4.47).

In 11 years in the minors (9 spent in AAA), he won 55 games, split between starting and relieving.

He is (through 2008) the only major leaguer born in Rocky Comfort, MO, a small unincorporated town.

Phelps became a pitching coach with the Staten Island Yankees in 2016-2019. He was scheduled to be pitching coach of the Trenton Thunder in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to Covid-19. Phelps was pitching coach of the Somerset Patriots in 2021.
