Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Todd Noel was selected in the first round (17th overall) by the Chicago Cubs in the 1996 amateur draft. He is more famous for the trades in which he was involved than for anything he did on the playing field.

He played in the Cubs system from 1996 to 1998, going 5-1, 1.98 for the AZL Cubs in 1997 and 6-6, 4.03 for the Rockford Cubbies of the Midwest League in 1998. On July 31, 1998, he was traded by the Cubs to the Florida Marlins alongside fellow prospects Kevin Orie and Justin Speier in return for Felix Heredia and Steve Hoff. This trade was part of the infamous series of deals made by the Marlins after winning the 1997 World Series and which constituted a veritable fire sale.

He finished the 1998 season still in the Midwest League, with the Kane County Cougars, going 2-2, 5.30 in 7 games. That was all the time he was in the marlins system, as on February 1, 1999, he was traded again, this time heading to the New York Yankees alongside Ed Yarnall and Mark Johnson in return for 3B Mike Lowell. Of the three young players acquired by New York, only Yarnall would play for them in the majors, albeit only briefly, while Lowell had a long and productive career. In Noel's case, he played two seasons in the Yankees system, both with the Tampa Yankees of the Florida State League, in 1999 and 2000. He went 3-7, 4.34 in 17 games the first year, then made only 4 starts the second, putting up an ERA of 10.80 in 10 innings, to wash out of professional baseball.
