Biographical Information[edit]
Joe McIlvaine spent decades in baseball. His son Tim McIlvaine later was a scout.
McIlvaine spent four years studying to be a priest before going into baseball. He played in the minor leagues as a pitcher from 1969-1973, going 16-16. To avoid military service, he was teaching elementary school for most of the year, limiting his pitching availability.
McIlvaine was a scout for the Baltimore Orioles, California Angels, and Milwaukee Brewers in the 1970's. He moved to the New York Mets as the Scouting Director from 1981 to 1985 (overseeing drafts where they signed Dwight Gooden, Roger McDowell and Randy Myers), and assistant GM from 1986 to 1990. He moved to the San Diego Padres as General Manager 1990 to 1993 and returned to the Mets as GM from 1993 to 1997. In 2011 he was a special assistant to the GM of the Minnesota Twins. He held the same role in 2013 with the Seattle Mariners.
During his time with the Mets, McIlvaine drafted but was unable to sign many players who would go on to reach the majors for other teams including: Matt LeCroy, Scott Proctor, Aaron Rowand, Garrett Atkins, Jeremy Guthrie and David DeJesus.
