Joe Carter | Fred McGriff |
On December 5, 1990, the Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres completed a trade that shook the baseball world. The teams swapped two All-Star players apiece in an even two-for-two trade. In an effort to shake up the Blue Jays clubhouse, general manager Pat Gillick found a willing trading partner in the Padres. Gillick sent McGriff, who had won the 1989 AL home run title, and Gold Glove shortstop Fernandez to the Padres for Carter and Alomar.
This trade put in place the final pieces for the 1992 and 1993 World Series titles for the Blue Jays. Combining that with Alomar's youth at the time (he was just 22), the Blue Jays came out as the "winner" when the trade is reviewed in hindsight.
Considering the current dearth of trades, this may be one of the last blockbuster trades in baseball history.
