Biographical Information

Matt Clement was a 2005 All-Star, pitching nine seasons and winning 87 games. Effectively wild, he was the National League leader in wild pitches three times between 2000 and 2003 while pacing the NL with 125 walks for the San Diego Padres in 2000. He struck out triple digits worth of hitters in seven of his seasons, with a career best 215 for the 2002 Chicago Cubs. All those bullets eventually wore down his shoulder, ending his 2006 season abruptly, missing all of 2007 and retiring after aborted comeback attempts in 2008 and 2009.

As a high schooler, Matt was also a talented point guard, leading Butler High in Pennsylvania to the WPIAL Class AAAA final his senior year. Some Division I schools recruited Clement for basketball, but he opted for baseball instead. After his career ended, Clement went back to high school basketball, becoming the coach for his alma mater in June 2009. In 2011, fellow former major leaguer (and minor league teammate) Todd Erdos joined Butler as baseball coach, giving Butler two former big leaguers coaching for their sports teams.
