Biographical Information[edit]

The Oakland Athletics drafted Gabe Alvarez in the 3rd round of the 1992 amateur draft out of Bishop Amat Memorial High School, but he opted to attend college instead. He played at the University of Southern California (USC) as a shortstop from 1993-1995 and had a career .338 batting average for the Trojans, with 28 home runs and 163 RBI. He earned Baseball America All-America second team honors in his 1993 freshman season after batting .326 with eight home runs and 53 RBI. The accolades continued in 1994 and 1995 as he was named a first team All-America pick by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association both years along with earning other honors.

Alvarez was drafted a second time by the San Diego Padres in the 2nd round of the 1995 amateur draft and he played in their minor league system through the 1997 season. After the season Alvarez was drafted a third time by the Arizona Diamondbacks as the 5th pick in the 1997 expansion draft. Along with Matt Drews and Joe Randa, he was immediately traded to the Detroit Tigers for Travis Fryman. He spent parts of the 1998-2000 seasons with the Tigers before they traded him to the Padres in July 2000. Overall he hit .222/.289/.357 in the majors while appearing in 92 games. Alvarez played professionally for three more years in three different organizations, but never returned to the major leagues.

After several years away from the game, Alvarez became an assistant coach at USC in September 2010. Over time his responsibilities increased and he became the team's recruiting coordinator in 2015 and their hitting coach in 2020. He coached his final season with the Trojans in 2021.

In July 2021 the Tigers hired Alvarez as their minor league hitting coordinator. This proved to be a temporary role as Detroit named him manager of the Erie SeaWolves in 2022, a role he repeated in 2023.
