Biographical Information[edit]

Alan Webb pitched in the minor and independent leagues from 1997 to 2005 and again in 2009. He was originally taken by the Detroit Tigers in the 4th round of the 1997 amateur draft at 17 years old, ahead of infielder Chone Figgins and outfielder Eric Byrnes; he was signed by scout Rob Wilfong. He reached Triple-A for the first time in 2003, but spent only 9 career games at that level.

Perhaps his best season was 1998, when he went 10-7 with a 2.93 ERA in 27 starts for the West Michigan Whitecaps; in 172 innings, he allowed just 110 hits and 58 walks (0.977 WHIP), while striking out 202 batters. Going into 1999, he was ranked the #6 prospect in the Tigers system by Baseball America. On November 2, 1999, he was traded with Frank Catalanotto, Francisco Cordero, Bill Haselman, Gabe Kapler and Justin Thompson to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Juan Gonzalez, Danny Patterson and Gregg Zaun. Overall, he went 41-51 with a 4.84 ERA in 291 games (122 starts). In 870 innings, he allowed 824 hits and 425 walks, while striking out 749 innings.
