Team History[edit]

The Charleston RiverDogs, formerly of the South Atlantic League, briefly in Low-A East, and now in the Carolina League, are owned by a group that includes actor Bill Murray - who wears the whimsical title "Director of Fun". The Tampa Bay Rays farmhands play their home games at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in Charleston, SC.

The longtime New York Yankees (2005-2019) and previously Tampa Bay Devil Rays (1997-2004) affiliate moved back into the Rays' system in MLB's 2021 Minor League Reorganization. Starting in 2016, they hosted even-year games in the annual inter-level Battle of the Beaches with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans - but the downsizing ended the pre-season Battle by placing the two teams into the same circuit.

Prior to becoming the RiverDogs in 1994, this franchise was known as the Charleston Royals from 1980 through 1984 and the Charleston Rainbows from 1985 through 1993. The 2021 RiverDogs' Low-A East championship was the first league crown for any Charleston affiliated baseball franchise since 1922. The 'Dogs then went back-to-back by also taking the 2022 title.

The RiverDogs play Copa de la Diversión Hispanic engagement campaign games as Perros Santos de Charleston (Charleston Holy Dogs).
