Team History[edit]
The Fredericksburg Nationals, of the Carolina League and briefly Low-A East, got off to a terrible start on the field in their first season, 2021, yet sold out nearly two-thirds of their home games. The Washington Nationals farmhands play their home games at Virginia Credit Union Stadium in Fredericksburg, VA.
The former Potomac Nationals had tried for years to get a new ballpark in Prince William County, VA, with Minor League Baseball issuing waivers for the substandard G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium - more and more reluctantly - from 2012 on. After convincing Fredericksburg, VA, to build them a ballpark that would have been ready to open the 2020 campaign, they were hit with back-to-back setbacks: the Coronavirus pandemic wiped out the 2020 season, and the 2021 Minor League Reorganization lowered the FredNats one level - before they had played a High-A game under their new brand in their new playpen.
The 2021 FredNats lost their first 15 games but sold out 37 of their 57 home dates - including two crowds of more than 5,000 in a stadium with a stated capacity of 3,800.
During the FredNats' 2022 Salute to Service on May 15th, retired U.S. Marine Ralph Wilcox - just three weeks from his 100th birthday - threw out the ceremonial first pitch.[1] The 20-year veteran served hazardous duty on Guadalcanal and Peleliu during World War II.
One of the team logos features Fredericksburger Mary Washington, the mother of the father of our country.
The FredNats play Copa de la Diversión Hispanic engagement campaign games as Fundadores de Fredericksburg (Fredericksburg Founders).
