1999 Futures Game
The first Futures Game (played on July 11, 1999 in Fenway Park) witnessed a star performance by a future major-league All-Star, Columbus Clippers shortstop Alfonso Soriano. The former Hiroshima Carp infielder went 2 for 3, hitting two of the game's three home runs, and driving in 5 of the World's 7 runs in their 7-0 rout; he was named game MVP. LF Jorge Toca added a 2-run homer to score Erubiel Durazo in the third for the World club. The World's shutout pitching was provided by Tomokazu Ohka, Sun-Woo Kim, Tony Armas Jr., Chris Mears, Wascar Serrano, Luke Prokopec, J.C. Romero and Francisco Cordero. Mark Mulder was the primary victim, allowing 5 runs in 2/3 of an inning of work. The heart of the USA lineup provided nothing, as Lance Berkman, Pat Burrell, Nick Johnson and Russell Branyan were a combined 1 for 11 while hitting third through sixth.
