Biographical Information[edit]

Despite allowing over a hit per inning, Matt Riley was 1-1 with a save and a 3.09 ERA for the US junior national team in 1997. He was one of three hurlers from the squad who made the majors, joining aces Rick Ankiel and Cory Vance, two fellow southpaws.

He was considered a huge prospect when he made his major league debut for the Baltimore Orioles late in the 1999 season, just a month after his 20th birthday, but after making three starts that month, he began to be bothered by injuries, missing the entire 2001 season, and did not make it back to the big leagues until 2003.
