1993 AAA All-Star Game
The 1993 AAA All-Star Game took place on July 14, 1993. The sixth annual game was played at Albuquerque Sports Stadium, home of the Albuquerque Dukes.
The National League would be the home team for the fourth straight year, and fifth year overall. The NL squad would be managed by hometown Dukes manager Bill Russell. His assistants were Marc Bombard of the Indianapolis Indians and George Culver of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons. The AL team would be led by Charlie Manuel of the Charlotte Knights with coaches Jeff Cox from the Omaha Royals and Scott Ullger from the Portland Beavers. For the first time in the games history there would be no television coverage.
For the second straight year rain delayed the game, as the game was delayed by two hours. The NL got out to an early lead with a run in the first, followed by 4 in the second. The game was never in question as the NL ran away to a 14-3 victory. The NL hit five homers in the game. Ryan Klesko hit two homers and picked up 3 RBI, Kevin Roberson and Steve Pegues each hit a two run shot, and Ryan Thompson had a solo homer. The AL had two longballs of their own with Lee Stevens and Drew Denson hitting solo home runs. Despite the offensive explosion by the NL, AL pitchers were able to combine for 11 strikeouts. The win went to Roy Smith and the loss to John O’Donoghue.
The Stars of Stars awards were given out to one player from each minor league. The International League award was given to Richmond Braves first baseman Ryan Klesko for going 4-4 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI, and 4 runs scored. The American Association award went to Roy Smith from the Buffalo Bisons. Smith pitched two innings and gave up only 1 hit in the start for the NL. The Pacific Coast League award was won by Dukes outfielder Billy Ashley. Ashley went 2-3 with an RBI.
Future stars in the game included Klesko, Jim Thome, Chipper Jones, Javy Lopez and Steve Trachsel.
