2003 AAA All-Star Game
The 2003 AAA All-Star Game was played on July 16, 2003 in Memphis, TN. The event was hosted by the Memphis Redbirds, the AAA affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Pacific Coast League served as the home team. The PCL All-Stars were managed by Rick Sweet of the Portland Beavers. His assistants were Jim Eppard of the Salt Lake Stingers and Dyar Miller of the Memphis Redbirds. The International League team was managed by Marc Bombard of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons. Bobby Floyd of the Norfolk Tides and Omar Malave of the Syracuse SkyChiefs served as his coaches. The game was broadcast on ESPN2 with Bob Carpenter, Buck Martinez and Lesley Swanson calling the game.
In the highest scoring AAA All-Star Game to date the International League team scored in seven different innings. The Pacific Coast League was able to keep pace with the IL through the early innings as the fifth inning started 6-5 lead for the PCL. But the IL took the lead with a 3 run fifth and were able to keep the PCL in check on their way to a 13-9 victory. The game saw six home runs as Lou Collier, Johnny Estrada, Anton French, Jason Jones, Rene Reyes and Jason Smith all went yard. Sam Marsonek of the Columbus Clippers got the win while the loss was given to Jason Ryan of the hometown Redbirds.
The Stars of Stars Awards were given to the game MVP from each team. The International League award went to Johnny Estrada of the Richmond Braves who went 3-3 with 3 RBI, 2 runs scored and a home run. Jason Jones of the Oklahoma Redhawks won the award for the PCL going 1-2 with a home run and 3 RBI.
The game featured a number of future big leaguers including Estrada, Chase Utley, Aaron Miles, Terrmel Sledge, Garrett Atkins, Chad Tracy, Ryan Madson, Bronson Arroyo and Justin Duchscherer.
