Biographical Information[edit]

Steve Pegues, who hit .361 in 18 games with two teams in the majors in 1994 and came back for 171 more at-bats in 1995. He made his major league debut with the Cincinnati Reds on July 6, 1994 but was released after 11 games and signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates at the end of July, just before the strike brought the season to a premature end. He then spent 1995 with the Pirates as a back-up outfielder, hitting .246 with 6 homers and 16 RBIs in 82 games.

While his big league career was short, he had some great minor league stops. With the Fayetteville Generals for part of the 1989 season, he hit .309. With the London Tigers for part of the 1991 season, he hit .301. In 1993 with the Las Vegas Stars in 68 games, he hit .352 and slugged .563. With the Richmond Braves in 1996 in 52 games, he hit .341 and slugged .539. In 1998 with the Colorado Springs SkySox for 24 games, he hit .333.

Although he didn't usually show a lot of power, he hit triples well and stole some bases, with a peak of 22 stolen bases in 1989.

In 1992 in the Arizona Fall League, he set the record with 68 hits.

Pegues was a first round draft pick in the 1987 amateur draft, by the Detroit Tigers, with the 21st overall pick. He never played in the big leagues with the Tigers, however, being claimed off waivers by the San Diego Padres near the end of spring training in 1992, then signing with the Reds after being released by San Diego at the end of spring training in 1994. His professional career lasted until 1999, when he played one season in the Chinese Professional Baseball League with the Mercuries Tigers, hitting .282 in 36 games.
