Biographical Information

First baseman Drew Denson was a top draft pick who played briefly in the majors with the Atlanta Braves and Chicago White Sox.

After attending Cincinnati's Purcell Marian High School, where he starred in baseball and basketball, Denson was selected by the Braves in the 1st round of the 1984 amateur draft. He made his pro debut that summer with the GCL Braves, hitting .322 with 10 home runs and 45 RBI to win the Gulf Coast League Triple Crown. He reached the majors with Atlanta as a September call up in 1989 and recorded his first hit, a double off Eric Nolte of the San Diego Padres, on September 14th. Overall, he played 12 games with the club, starting 9 of them, and hit .250 (12-for-36) with 5 runs batted in.

Denson spent the entire 1990 season with the Triple A Richmond Braves and became a free agent at the end of the year. He did not play in 1991 but was signed by the White Sox the following January. He earned a late season trip back up to the bigs with the Sox in 1993, going 1-for-5 in 4 games. After his stint in the Chicago organization, he played two years in the Mexican League.

Following his baseball days, Denson was a Cincinnati police officer. He was forced to retire due to a rare blood disease called amyloidosis. He died from the disease in 2014 at age 48.
