Draft Notes

• Top pick Shawn Abner's brother Ben was also selected in the 1984 draft. He was drafted in the 5th round by the Montreal Expos.
• Tim Belcher, who had been the top pick of the June 1983 amateur draft, was selected by the New York Yankees with the first pick of the secondary phase of the January draft. He signed quickly with the Yankees, but was then immediately snapped up by the Oakland Athletics when the Yankees mistakenly left him unprotected for the free agent compensation draft.
