Prior to becoming an independent university in 1993, Coastal Carolina University was part of the University of South Carolina known as University of South Carolina Coastal Carolina College. Coastal Carolina has sponsored baseball since 1976.
Coastal Carolina won the 2016 College World Series, the first national championship for the school in any sport. It was also Coastal's first appearance in the tournament and the first time a team from the Big South Conference had appeared in the College World Series.
