Biographical Information[edit]
Drew Thomas pitched for Illinois State University and graduated with a degree in History. Thomas pitched in the San Diego Padres organization in 1998 and played for the Canton Crocodiles of the independent Frontier League in 1999-2000. While with the Crocs, Thomas was the 2000 Frontier League Relief Pitcher of the Year and a second-team Baseball America All-Independent team member.
Thomas turned to coaching after his playing career ended, initially as a private instructor. He joined the IMG Academy in 2003 and coached there into 2006. In August 2006 Coastal Carolina University hired Thomas as a volunteer assistant coach with a focus on pitching. He stayed in this role for five years which is an unusually long time for a volunteer assistant coach. Thomas was promoted to a full-time assistant coaching position in August 2011. The Chanticleers reached the pinnacle of college baseball when they won the 2016 College World Series. Known primarily for offense that year, the pitching staff turned in a stellar performance to lead the team to the national championship. Thomas remained the team's pitching coach through 2021.
The Milwaukee Brewers hired Thomas as a pitching coach for the Carolina Mudcats in 2022. He started 2023 as the pitching coach for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, but left in mid-June to return to the college ranks as pitching coach for the University of Central Florida.
