The Southeastern Conference has held a championshp series or tournament every year since 1948, except 1951-1952 and 2010.
The format has gone through various changes over the years:
- From 1948 to 1950, the conference held a best-of-five series between the Eastern Division champions and the Western Division Champions. The series was held at both the home stadiums.
- From 1954 to 1976, the conference held a best-of-three series between the Eastern Division champions and the Western Division Champions. The series was held at both the home stadiums.
- From 1977 to 1986, the conference held a double-elimination tournament involving the top two teams from each of the Eastern and Western division.
- From 1987 to 1991, the conference held a double-elimination tournament involving the top six teams in the conference.
- In 1992, the conference held a double-elimination tournament involving the top four teams from each of the Eastern and Western division.
- From 1993 to 1995, the conference held two double elimination tournaments, one for the Eastern Division and one for the Western Division, in an attempt to two automatic qualfiers to the NCAA Tournament. Both tournament involved all six teams from the division. The NCAA declined to give two automatic bids, instead giving the automatic bid to the division winner with the highest overall winning position.
- From 1996 to 2011, the conference held a double elimination tournament involving the top eight teams in the conference.
- In 2012 the conference held a double elimination tournament involving the top ten teams in the conference.
- From 2013-2024 the conference held a double elimination tournament involving the top twelve teams in the conference. The first four games of the tournament are single elimination contest among the bottom eight schools in the tournament.
- In 2025 the conference will use a single elimination tournament involving all 16 teams in the conference.
Louisiana State University has claimed 13 championships as of 2024, the most in the conference. Paul Mainieri and Jim Wells have each coached 6 champions through 2024. University of Florida has been runner up 11 times through 2024. University of Kentucky has never won the championship through 2024.
