Biographical Information

Not to be confused with his contemporary, major league pitcher Chris Young, Chris Young pitched in the minor leagues from 2002 to 2008. He was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 28th round of the 2002 amateur draft, out of Mississippi State University, and began his career that season with the Tri-City Dust Devils of the Northwest League, going 5-5, 2.34 in 17 games as a swingman.

He continued his progression all the way to AAA, which he reached in 2007 and 2008 with the Albuquerque Isotopes of the Pacific Coast League. By then he had changed organizations twice, spending the last third of the 2005 season with the Lynchburg Hillcats, the affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Carolina League, and then his his next two pro seasons in the Florida Marlins organization. He finished his career with the Camden Riversharks of the Atlantic League in 2008. His results at AAA were poor, with a 7.02 ERA in 35 games, but he had some success at lower levels, going 8-3, 3.60 with the Visalia Oaks of the California League in 2004 and 4-4, 2.42 with 12 saves for the Carolina Mudcats of the Southern League in 2006.

After retiring as a player, he worked from 2010-2014 as a pro scout with the San Diego Padres, followed by two seasons in the same capacity with the Houston Astros. The Astros promoted Young to Major League Scouting Supervisor in 2017. In 2018, he was hired as assistant pitching coach of the Philadelphia Phillies, under new manager Gabe Kapler. He was promoted to pitching coach in 2019, but was let go at the same time as Kapler following the season. He then joined the Chicago Cubs in 2020, where he became bullpen coach under new manager David Ross. Young remained in this position through the end of the 2023 season.
