Rodney James Delmonico

Biographical Information[edit]

Rod Delmonico was an assistant coach at Gloucester County College in 1981, Clemson University in 1982-1983, and Florida State University from 1984 to 1989. He was the head coach at the University of Tennessee from 1990 to 2007, with a 699-396 record, setting a school record for victories. Among the players he developed were Jimmy Key, Todd Helton, Luis Alicea and Paul Sorrento. Delmonico then moved to Florida State University as a volunteer assistant coach.

Delmonico was named Baseball America Coach of the Year in 1995, and has led the Vols to the College World Series in 1995, 2001 and 2005. He won his 650th game in March of 2006.

After leaving Tennessee, Delmonico was with Major League Baseball International, teaching at clinics in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Croatia.

Delmonico is the author of Hit and Run Baseball, Offensive Drills, Defensive Baseball and Defensive Drills.

Delmonico managed the Dutch national team in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, replacing long-time skipper Robert Eenhoorn. He guided the team to a strong finish, beating the All-Star-loaded Dominican national team twice and making the quarterfinals.

Delmonico's son, Tony Delmonico, played for Rod at Tennessee and Florida State and was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Another son, Nick Delmonico, has played in the majors.
