Biographical Information[edit]
Roy Mewbourne was a college coach.
He was in the US Army from 1967-1969, reaching the rank of Lieutenant. He was assistant coach at his alma mater from 1970-1971; the team finished second in the 1970 College World Series. He was then assistant coach at Birmingham-Southern College in 1972 and head coach from 1973-1978, going 267-74 and winning Southern States Conference Coach of the Year in '78. He took the team to the 1975 NAIA College World Series. He then was 655-608-9 as head coach of Vanderbilt University from 1979-2002, winning Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year in 1980 and setting a then-school-record for wins (35) in 1985. He coached Joey Cora, Josh Paul, Matt Kata, Scotti Madison and Jeremy Sowers.
