Biographical Information[edit]

Tom Swayze played both football and baseball at the University of Mississippi. A pitcher, he played three seasons of minor league ball after graduating in 1933. He was 6-11 with a 5.06 ERA for the Memphis Chickasaws in 1934. He split 1935 between Memphis (1-1, 5.09) and the Columbus Bengals/Cleveland Bengals (12-13, 4.42, 104 BB in 212 IP). With the '36 Cleveland A's, he ended his career with a 13-15, 3.35 campaign. He tied for second in the Cotton States League in losses,

From 1951 to 1971, he was head baseball coach at Ole Miss, posting a 361-201-2 record. He led the school to the College World Series in 1956, 1964, and 1969, and five of his players (Joe Gibbon, Jake Gibbs, Don Kessinger, Jack Reed, and Steve Dillard) reached the majors. He was also an assistant football coach at the school, largely responsible for recruiting.

The University of Mississippi's baseball field is named Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field in his honor.
