Biographical Information

Jack Reed played with the New York Yankees for three years, including 1961 during the great home run race between Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle. He was a three-sport star in college, playing in the 1953 Sugar Bowl. He was signed in 1953, but spent a couple of years in military service in Korea.

His lone career home run was a big one at Tiger Stadium on June 24, 1962. He snapped a 7-7 tie in the 22nd inning with a two-run blast off Phil Regan to give the Yanks a 9-7 win in the longest game in the history of the venerable Detroit ballpark.

He is one of only seven non-pitchers in the history of Major League Baseball (through 2006) to have played in over 100 games with more games played than plate appearances in his career. He played in 222 games with only 144 plate appearances. He was largely a defensive substitute in the outfield at a time when Mickey Mantle was starting to suffer from knee problems.

After his playing days he coached several teams and then became a farmer and a purchasing director for a company in Mississippi.
