Ohio-Pennsylvania League

From BR Bullpen

The Ohio-Pennsylvania League ran from 1905 through 1912. It was classified as a level C league for most of its lifespan, but was demoted to class D in 1912. Although disorganized, the league served as a training ground for players and officials who established reputations in the major leagues. Hall of Fame players and officials once connected to the Ohio-Pennsylvania League include George Sisler, Everett Scott, and Billy Evans.

The organization's beginnings can be traced to March 1905, when league president Charlie Morton invited six clubs to form the Protective Association of Independent Clubs. Anywhere from 11 to 14 teams (depending on the source) had joined the Ohio-Pennsylvania League by the opening of the 1905 season. Ohio members included Akron, Massillon, Mount Vernon, Newark, Niles, Youngstown, and Zanesville. Pennsylvania members included Braddock, Homestead, and Sharon. Two more Pennsylvania clubs became part of the League within the first two weeks of the season--Lancaster and McKeesport. (Some sources also include as members Kent, Steubenville, and Niles.)

Just 10 teams finished the season, however. In September, the Youngstown Ohio Works won the league championship, with a final record of 88 wins and 35 losses.

During the Ohio-Pennsylvania League's seven-year lifespan, members were also drawn from Alliance, East Liverpool, Girard, Mansfield, Marion, Salem, and Sebring (in Ohio); and Butler and Erie (in Pennsylvania). The league's sprawling roster of teams would become more manageable as other minor league organizations appeared in the region. These included the Pennsylvania-Ohio-Maryland League (1906), Western Pennsylvania League (1907), and Ohio State League (1908).

In 1912, the league rescinded its membership in the National Association when it placed a franchise in Pittsburgh, PA.
