Biographical Information

Infielder Jim Barton played in the minor leagues from 1903 to 1912, in 1920 and in 1923. He played in 1,001 career games and collected 774 hits.

He debuted with the Anderson/Grand Rapids Orphans in 1903, hitting .197 as their starting shortstop. He split 1904 between Grand Rapids (.269 in 25 G) and the Rochester Bronchos (.223, .241 SLG in 31 G). He spent 1905 with the Terre Haute Hottentots. He hit .242 as the second baseman for the 1906 Lincoln Ducklings. In '07, he batted .236 and slugged .286 for the Haverhill Hustlers. He split 1908 between Haverhill and the Lynn Shoemakers, batting a combined .213 with a .269 slugging. In 1909, he hit .241 with a career-high 109 hits in 122 games as player-manager for the New Castle Nocks. He was 10th in the Ohio-Pennsylvania League in hits in the heart of the Deadball Era. He remained as player-manager of New Castle in 1910, falling to .165 with a .191 slugging.

He was also player-manager part of the season of the Hamilton Mechanics in 1911 (and hit .232, slugging .287) and the Cincinnati Pippins in 1912 (.216, .248 SLG). He guided the Portsmouth Truckers for part of 1920 (going 11 for 41 with a double in limited time at the plate). His last stint was with the 1923 Morristown Roosters, again as player-manager; he hit .221/?/.250 in 38 games.
