Biographical Information[edit]

John "Red" Davis had one year in the majors along with long careers in the minors as a player and manager.

His one season as a player in the majors occurred in 1941. He became the New York Giants' regular third baseman for 21 games from September 9-28, posting a fielding average well above the league average. However, his batting average was only .214. He replaced Dick Bartell at third base during that period; Bartell was a player/coach that year, and his playing time after 1940 never exceeded 400 at-bats.

His minor league playing career was in 1935-1941, 1946-1954, and 1958.

He spent 27 seasons as a minor league manager between 1949-1976, compiling a record of 1,993-1,927. He started managing for independent teams in 1949, then moved to the New York Giants organization (1954-1962), Cincinnati Reds (1963-1966), Cleveland Indians (1967-1969), Pittsburgh Pirates (1970-1972), and back to the Indians (1973-1976).
