- Pitcher Dave Wainhouse became the first Canadian ever selected in the first round when the Montreal Expos chose him with the 19th pick.
- The Los Angeles Dodgers selected catcher Mike Piazza in the 62nd Round largely as a favor to his father, Vince, a friend of Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda.
