Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Tom Fischer was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the first round of the 1988 amateur draft. He pitched in the Boston system from 1988 to 1993, including a couple of season with the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox in 1991 and 1992, but never reached the major leagues.

Fischer started off well, going 7-4, 3.52 with the Lynchburg Red Sox in 1988, and 12-13, 4.78 with the same team in 1989. After a season where he went 13-10, 4.19 for the AA New Britain Red Sox in 1990, his career began to stall. His first stint at Pawtucket in 1991 resulted in a record of 0-2, 9.58 and a return to New Britain, where he was only 8-11, 4.09. In spending the full 1992 season at Pawtucket, he made only 5 starts in 36 appearances, with an unimpressive record of 1-0, 6.27 and 3 saves.

Likely the victim of an arm injury at that point, Fischer was out of the U.S. minors until 1996, when he pitched a season with the Madison Black Wolf of the independent Northern League. His record was 6-6, 5.09 in 17 starts.
