Biographical Information

Mickey Morandini was the All-Star SS in the 1987 Intercontinental Cup, the lone American named to that All-Star team. He hit .404/~.433/.684, with a tourney-high 8 doubles. He led the Americans with 16 runs and 13 RBI, well shy of Omar Linares on both fronts, as the U.S. won silver. He was just 1 for 13 with 3 walks for Team USA in the 1988 Baseball World Cup, playing primarily DH with Ty Griffin at second base and Dave Silvestri at short. He was signed as a 5th round pick in the 1988 amateur draft by the Philadelphia Phillies and scout Tony Lucadello.

He turned an unassisted triple play on September 20, 1992 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Jeff King was the batter.

In spite of hitting only 32 career home runs, and only four total home runs in 1999, Morandini connected for two home runs in one game on July 1st that year, playing for the Chicago Cubs against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Morandini was head coach at Valparaiso High School for four years (2007-2010). After three years of managing (see below), Morandini moved up to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in 2014. He was scheduled to return in 2015, but the Phillies appointed him hitting coach for the Reading Fightin Phils on an interim basis to replace Frank Cacciatore. After Cacciatore's return, Morandini stayed in Reading for the remainder of the season. In 2016, he was named first base coach of the Phillies and stayed there for two years. The Phillies did not bring him back in 2018 because new manager Gabe Kapler chose different coaches.

Though his professional coaching career is probably over, Morandini remains connected to the Phillies as a club ambassador from 2018-2020. As a club ambassador, Mornandini represents the Phillies at golf tournaments, schools, and banquets. He visits children in the hospital as well as generally hanging out with sponsors and fans.
