The name Memphis Chicks is a contraction of Memphis Chickasaws, which was the team's formal name from 1912-1960, although the name was commonly abbreviated even then. The name refers to a local Native American tribe and was used by local teams even before Memphis joined the Southern Association in 1901. From 1901 to 1911 the team was known as the Memphis Egyptians and Memphis Turtles. In 1998 the team relocated to Jackson, TN and renamed the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx.
