Biographical Information[edit]
Dan Rohn is a long-time minor-league manager who played three seasons in the major leagues. After a cup of coffee with the Chicago Cubs in 1983, he was part of the 1984 Cubs team that made the first postseason appearance since 1945. In 1983, he was the last player until Paulo Orlando in 2015 to hit at least one triple in his first two big league games. He also appeared briefly with the Cleveland Indians in 1986.
In 1990, Rohn played for the Fort Myers Sun Sox of the Senior Professional Baseball Association. He played in 24 games and was batting .284 with 9 RBI when the league folded.
He was a three-sport athlete in high school in Michigan, and his time at Central Michigan University overlapped with that of Chris Knapp. In addition to his time with the Cubs and Indians, he also played in the minor league organizations of the Oakland Athletics and the Texas Rangers.
Rohn turned to coaching immediately after his playing career ended in 1989. He was a coach for the Portland Beavers in 1990. He first became a manager in 1991. He managed for 12 years in the Minnesota Twins and Seattle Mariners organizations. He was the Minnesota Twins' minor league infield instructor in 1993 and hitting coach of the Salt Lake Buzz in 1994. He was later a hitting coach for the Memphis Chicks in 1997.
From 2001-2005 he managed the AAA Tacoma Rainiers, and had three division titles, being named Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year three times, in 2001, 2004 and 2005. The Mariners brought Rohn to the major league staff in 2006 as an administrative assistant. In this role he coordinated scouting information before and during games while breaking down pitching and hitting tendencies. Amidst a poor season, the Mariners fired him on September 13th to end Rohn's affiliation with the team. He was named manager of the Fresno Grizzlies after the 2006 season where he stayed for three years followed by a single year in Las Vegas.
In 2011 Rohn returned to his home in Traverse City, MI and spent the next two years as a special assistant for the Traverse City Beach Bums. He became the team's bench coach in 2013 followed by a promotion to manager in 2014. He retired after the 2018 season, but returned to managing in 2020-2021 with the Lake Erie Crushers, also in the independent Frontier League.
In addition to coaching & managing in the states, Rohn worked internationally during the some winter.
- 2002/2003 Manager Cardenales de Lara in the Venezuelan Winter League
- 2003/2004 Manager Cardenales
- 2009/2010 Manager Gigantes de Carolina in the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League
