Biographical Information

After pitching in college (1966-1969), Rick Mathews coached high school baseball for seven years. From 1976 to 1980 he was the head coach at Iowa Western Community College. He was also a part time scout for the Kansas City Royals (1971-1974) and Philadelphia Phillies (1974-1977).

Mathews managed in the Royals' chain from 1981 to 1984 and 1987, and was the Royals assistant director of player development in 1985-1986.

Mathews then returned to Indian Hills as the head coach for 6 years, before joining the Colorado Rockies organization.

In 1992, Mathews was the pitching coach of the AZL Rockies, and was the Rockies bullpen coach for most of 1993 and again in 1995. He spent seven years as the roving pitching coach for the Rockies, then rejoined the club as bullpen coach in 2003.
