Biographical Information[edit]
Sheriff Robinson ended a long career in professional baseball in 1978 as a special assignment scout with the New York Mets. He had begun his career in 1938 as a minor league catcher in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system.
He later became a manager in the minor league system for many years. He moved to the Boston Red Sox chain in 1954, leading the Corning Red Sox to the best record in the PONY League and the league title. From there he moved up through the system: the San Jose Red Sox in 1955, the Albany Senators in 1956, the Oklahoma City Indians in 1957, the Memphis Chicks in 1958, the Allentown Red Sox in 1959-1960. He moved to the New York Yankees system in 1961, with the Amarillo Gold Sox, who had the best record in the Texas League. He managed the Richmond Virginians in 1962. Moving to the Mets chain in 1963, he managed the Quincy Jets.
He was a coach on the big league Mets in 1964, started 1965 as manager of the Buffalo Bisons, but was back as a coach in mid-season, and stayed on the staff through 1967. He was also a scout for the Mets from the late 1960s to the late 1970s, and again coached the club in 1972.
