Team History[edit]
The Lakeland Flying Tigers, of the Single-A Florida State League and briefly in Low-A Southeast, play at what was once the site of a military aviator school - a fact that is reflected in much of their motif. The Detroit Tigers farmhands play their home games at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, FL.
MLB’s 2021 Minor League Reorganization lowered the Tigers, and most of the FSL, one level.
They prepended "Flying" to "Tigers" in 2007, announcing the coming change on Veterans' Day 2006. The rebrand salutes the U.S. Flying Tigers fighter squadron, which defended China from the Japanese prior to the United States entering World War II. In a more general sense, it also honors the site's history as a WWII aviator school. This also accounts for "The Runway" (built over and mimicking one of the school's runways), logo, slogan ("Every game is a mission") and stencil-style uniform numerals.
Like seven of the other nine FSL teams, the Flying Tigers are owned by their parent club.
