Biographical Information

Starting pitcher Nick Additon began his professional career in 2007. He reached Triple-A for the first time in 2011.

He was drafted in the 47th round of the 2006 amateur draft by the St. Louis Cardinals and began his professional career the next year. He started off well, posting ERAs of 3.41, 2.23 and 3.11 in his first three seasons. He was with the Johnson City Cardinals (2-1, Sv, 3.76 in 14 G) and Batavia Muckdogs (1-0, 0 R in 5 1/3 IP) his first year. In 2008, he had perhaps his best year (through 2013), going 9-5 with a 2.50 ERA for the Quad Cities River Bandits and 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA for the Palm Beach Cardinals. He was 5th in the Midwest League in ERA (between Blake Beavan and Marc Rzepczynski). Among Cardinals farmhands, he was first in wins (one more than Brandon Dickson and P.J. Walters) and third in strikeouts (trailing Walters and Jess Todd). In 2009, he was with the Palm Beach Cardinals (4-3, 3.06) and Springfield Cardinals (2-3, 3.19).

The Florida native posted a 9-6, 4.43 record for Springfield in 2010. He was tied for 10th in the Texas League in wins, 7th in strikeouts (109, between Everett Teaford and Michael Anton) and 5th in innings (150 1/3, between Keith Weiser and Ryan Brasier. In the Cards farm chain, he ranked 9th in wins, 4th in IP (between Arquimedes Nieto and Brian Broderick) and 6th in strikeouts (between Scott Schneider and Michael Blazek). In 2011, he appeared for Springfield (4-1, 2.93 in 10 G) and the Memphis Redbirds (4-8, 4.56). Only John Gast pitched more innings among Cardinals minor leaguers, while Nick was 5th in K (128, between Trevor Rosenthal and Dickson).

In 2012, Additon pitched for the Redbirds (3-8, 4.55) and the GCL Cardinals (0 R in 6 IP). He was 9-7 with a 4.10 ERA with the 2013 Redbirds. He tied Seth Blair for 4th in the St. Louis system in strikeouts (117) and tied Joe Cuda and Kurt Heyer for third in wins. He tied Asher Wojciechowski for 9th in the 2013 PCL in victories, was 10th in ERA and tied Justin Marks for 10th in strikeouts.

He became a free agent for 2014 and signed with the Baltimore Orioles. That year, he went 7-6 with a 3.86 ERA in 32 games (14 starts) between the Bowie Baysox and Triple-A Norfolk Tides. He signed with the Milwaukee Brewers for 2015 but had a 5.33 ERA in 21 games (11 starts) in their system; Milwaukee released him and he returned to the Orioles system, going 3-2 with a 2.97 ERA at Double A. Overall, he was 8-5 with a 4.55 ERA that year. He began 2016 with the Tides and, despite going 1-10, posted a decent 3.81 ERA in 16 games (13 starts). He finished the year with the Chinatrust Brothers, going 2-1 with a 4.30 ERA. He played or the Lotte Giants in the Korea Baseball Organization in 2017, going 2-7 with a 5.91 ERA in 15 games (13 starts); in August, he signed a deal with a Colorado Rockies and went 0-4 with a 2.91 ERA in five starts for the Hartford Yard Goats.

His brother Ryan Additon is an umpire who worked his first major league games in 2017. The two have appeared in the same game on various occasions in the minor leagues.
