Georgia-Alabama League

From BR Bullpen

There were several versions of the Georgia-Alabama League in the history of minor league baseball, all ranked class D. The first such circuit ran from 1913-1917. From 1928-1930 a second league used that name. It was revived 16 years later for its longest run, a whole six seasons, 1946 through 1951. The league covered a total span of some 39 seasons but only fielded teams in 14 of those years.

16 cities were represented throughout this span; 9 hailed from Alabama and 7 from Georgia. No city was represented in all 3 runs of the league's organized years. Out of the 14 seasons that the league actually played, the Georgia teams came up with 11 titles and the Alabama boys managed only 3. Four Georgia teams won two titles each over the league's three eras - Newnan, GA won the first of their two crowns in 1915, then waited some 34 years to collect the second in 1949, the league's last time in operation. Lindale, GA won twice, 1929 & '30; Carrollton, GA picked up two titles, back to back in 1946 & '47 and LaGrange, GA finished out the league's life by taking the last two years' championships in 1950 & '51.

Attendance figures were available for the last run of six years and the league drew just shy of 2,000,000 fans to the parks. They drew a big 480,000 count in 1947 but by 1951 it dropped to a little over 175,000...and therein lies the reason for the close.
