Biographical Information[edit]

Mike Conte reached AA as a player and later was a college coach.

Conte hit .352 as a college junior. As a senior, he led his team in homers, triples, RBI and steals and finished 5th in Virginia Tech history with 43 home runs. The Oakland A's took him in the 19th round of the 1989 amateur draft, one round before they chose Matt Mieske. In his pro debut, Mike hit .302/.379/.412 for the Southern Oregon A's, with 19 steals in 23 tries and 64 runs in 61 games. He was second in the Northwest League in runs (6 behind Darrell Sherman) and he tied for 7th in steals.

In 1990, Conte struggled with the Madison Muskies (.173/.265/.266 in 55 G) and Modesto A's (.243/.330/.369 in 73 G; he also pitched one shutout inning). He stole only 10 bases in 21 attempts that year. The next year, he was a bit better with Modesto (.375/.432/.525 in 11 G) and the Huntsville Stars (.228/.278/.298 in 104 G, 13 outfield assists). Back with Huntsville in 1992, he produced at a .238/.325/.303 clip and was 1-0 with a 7.71 ERA. He was a full-time pitcher in 1993, his final season, faring poorly with the Southern Oregon A's (2-4, 8.41, 1.83 WHIP) and San Bernardino Spirit (0-1, 10 H, 15 R, 10 ER, 12 BB in 7 1/3 IP).

Conte was assistant coach of California University of Pennsylvania from 1994-1996 then was promoted to head coach. In his first 15 years, he was 424-288-4 and was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West COach of the Year six times. He set a school record with 36 wins in 2007.
