California University of Pennsylvania was first known as Southwestern Normal School, then as California State Teachers College until 1959 and California State College until 1983. In July 2021, the university was officially merged with fellow Western Pennsylvania institutions Clarion University of Pennsylvania and Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. On October 14, 2021, the state officially adopted the new name of the combined universities: Pennsylvania Western University.
