Biographical Information[edit]

Georgia native Red Roberts spent nine active seasons in professional baseball from 1940 to 1950. Roberts missed two seasons (1944-1945) while serving with the United States Military during World War II. Red had three solid years (1940-1942) at the start of his career in the minor leagues and spent 1943 in the Southern Association with the combined Chattanooga Lookouts and the Montgomery Rebels teams. He was close to the top in hitting for the war-time combined club with a .321 batting average and his 29 two-base hits led the squad.

This performance caused the parent Washington Senators to call Red to the Major Leagues and he made his debut with the Senators on September 3, 1943. The infielder appeared in nine games with 23 at-bats and 6 hits for a .261 batting average. He entered the military at the season's end and was released by the Senators on April 28, 1946. This was his only time in the Show.

Roberts spent his last four seasons (1947-1950) as a player-manager in the class D Georgia-Alabama League. He started with a bang in the 1947 year, leading the Carrollton Hornets to the league title and personally hitting at a league-leading .385 average and making the All-Star team at the shortstop position. He continued his professional game in this manner until his final season in 1950. Red finished his minor league career appearing in 913 games with 3,265 at-bats and 994 base-hits, that includes 31 homers, for a .304 career batting average.

After baseball Roberts returned to his home in Carrollton, GA, where he worked and lived until his death on December 2, 1988. He was 80 years of age.
