Biographical Information

Howie Camp played five games in the majors for the New York Yankees in 1917, hitting .286. Through 2019, he is the only major leaguer born in Hopeful, AL.

He was a long-time minor league star, hitting .313 lifetime in the minors with 2,370 hits. In 1921, he played for the Memphis Chicks, who won 104 games, and hit .345. He was 33 at the time. He played with the Toledo Mud Hens in 1919. Camp later managed in the minors for two seasons. In 1928, he managed the Meridian Mets to a second place finish (71-52) in the Cotton States League. He stayed in the Cotton States League in 1929, but switched to the Talladega Indians who finished in fourth place with a .500 record.
