Biographical Information[edit]
IF/OF Robert "Joe" Schmidt played minor league ball from 1937 to 1954, missing the 1942-1945 seasons due to miltary service. From 1937 to 1941 he was working his way up the St. Louis Cardinals farm system. Schmidt led the 1939 Northern League in numerous categories: 114 runs, 194 hits, 31 homers, 133 ribbies, and a .441 batting average which led all minor leagues. In 1941 Schmidt hit .305 in class-B ball, then missed four full seasons due to World War II. When he came back as a 28 year-old no longer in the Cards' system, he was stuck in B ball for another three seasons. In 1949-1950, he became a player/manager in D ball.
