Birmingham-Southern College was formed from a merger in May 1918 of Southern University, founded in Greensboro, AL in 1856, with Birmingham College, opened in 1898 in Birmingham, AL. In March 2024, it was announced Birmingham-Southern would close after the 2023-2024 school year citing financial troubles. The school made headlines when it qualified for the 2024 Division III College World Series, which began the same day the school closed its doors. Its baseball team proceeded while the school it represented technically no longer existed.

The school sponsored baseball in 1902-1929, 1935-1938, 1950-1951, 1967-2006, and 2008-2024. The school was a member of the NAIA through 2001, then jumped all the way up to the NCAA's division-I from 2002 to 2006. BSC then dropped from D-I to D-III in 2007, but had no team for one year.
