History, Comments, Contributions[edit]
During spring training, the 2024 Boston Red Sox were selected to play a special two-game exhibition series against the Tampa Bay Rays at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal in Santo Domingo on March 9-10. There had never been any major league games played in the Dominican Republic at that time, and the series was a way for MLB to gauge the possibility of eventually staging regular season games in the baseball-mad country at some point in the future. The Red Sox won both of the games against their division rivals.
They were always expected to have a rough time in the very strong AL East division, where the four other teams all had legitimate postseason aspirations, whereas they were still retooling with younger players. However, they managed to hold their own over the first few months, in large parts thanks to some of these young players taking a big step forward, notably LF and lead-off hitter Jarren Duran, who was playing at an All-Star caliber, rookie SS David Hamilton, who had stepped in better than anyone thought when veteran Trevor Story went down with an injury a few days into the season, and CF Ceddanne Rafaela. Others like C Connor Wong were having a career year, and Rafael Devers remained one of the most underrated run producers in the game. Contrary to the traditional image of Boston teams, this edition was built more on speed and athleticism than on raw power. They put those skills on display in a Sunday Night Baseball contest on June 16th against their traditional rivals the New York Yankees, owners of the best record in the majors at that point, when they beat them 9-3 by stealing a franchise record nine bases in the game. Hamilton had four by himself, Duran added a pair, and Rafaela, 1B Dominic Smith and DH Bobby Dalbec had one each, with the battery of Marcus Stroman and Jose Trevino being victimized for six of the thefts. Hamilton was just the third player in franchise history to steal four or more bases in a game, following Jerry Remy and Jacoby Ellsbury (who held the franchise single-game record with five).
