History, Comments, Contributions[edit]
For the 1907 Boston Red Sox, the start of the season was marred by tragedy. On March 28th, as spring training was winding down, OF Chick Stahl, who had managed the last-place team down the stretch in 1906 committed suicide in West Baden Springs, IN. He had recently resigned the managerial position, as the stress of leading the team had caused depression. The Red Sox scrambled to find a manager all season, as four men succeeded each other in the job, none with much success. Ace pitcher Cy Young went 3-3 before deciding he was not cut out for the job; he was followed by George Huff, who resigned after going 2-6 to return to his regular gig of coaching the University of Illinois baseball squad. Next up was OF Bob Unglaub, who did not fare better, going 9-20, before C Deacon McGuire took over on June 10th and went 45-61 to complete the season. Under his guidance, they went through a brutal 16-game losing streak (with two ties) starting on September 16th.
