Biographical Information[edit]
C/IF Connor Wong was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2017 amateur draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, out of the University of Houston. After 1 game with the AZL Dodgers, he was assigned to the Great Lakes Loons of the Midwest League where he hit .278 in 27 games. He then spent 2018 with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in the California League, where in 102 games he hit .269/.350/.480 with 19 homers and 60 RBIs. He split 2019 between Rancho Cucamonga and the Tulsa Drillers of the Texas League. He hit much better at the higher level - .349 in 40 games, after being at .245 in 71 games in Class A. He hit 24 doubles, 7 triples and 24 homers between the two stops and drove in 82 runs, continuing to display very good power.
On February 9, 2020, he was one of two prospects sent to the Boston Red Sox, alongside Jeter Downs, to prevent the earlier-completed Mookie Betts blockbuster deal from collapsing. In the original deal, Boston was to receive P Brusdar Graterol from the Minnesota Twins, who in turn obtained P Kenta Maeda from the Dodgers. However, the Red Sox had raised concerns over Graterol's health, threatening the whole complex deal, before the Dodgers agreed to take Graterol themselves in exchange for the two youngsters. They also exchanged some low-level prospects with the Twins to even things out.
He made his major league debut in the same game as vaunted prospect Wander Franco of the Tampa Bay Rays, on June 22, 2021. While Franco caught all of the media's attention - and deservedly so as he hit a double and a three-run homer - Wong pinch-ran for DH J.D. Martinez as the designated runner in the top of the 11th inning and ended up scoring the winning run for the Red Sox on a double by Rafael Devers.
He had a career game for the Red Sox against the Toronto Blue Jays on May 2, 2023, as he went 4 for 4 and doubled his career home run total up to that point by going deep twice. His second homer, off Erik Swanson in the bottom of the 8th inning, was the winning run in a 7-6 win for Boston.
