The 2023 Boston Red Sox started the season with their bats red hot as they scored 9 runs in each of their first three games of the season against the Baltimore Orioles, becoming only the third team to do so since 1901, and the first since the 1978 Milwaukee Brewers. Their pitching was not quite so good, as they lost to the Orioles on Opening Day, March 30th, by a 10-9 score, but they won their next two games 9-8 in walk-off fashion on April 1st and 9-5 on April 2nd. This came in spite of losing two big bats during the off-season - Xander Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez - but the additions of Justin Turner, Adam Duvall and Japanese import Masataka Yoshida compensated for this. More problematic was the pitching, as their starters in the first two games, Corey Kluber and Chris Sale, had combined to give up 12 runs in 6 1/3 innings.
